One language dies every 14 days

DHAKA: According to the UNESCO, in every two weeks, one language disappears from the world along with its history and culture.

Therefore, United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) made the call to use International Mother Language Day as a tool to preserve these languages from extinction.

On Tuesday (February 20), UNESCO Director General Audrey Azoulay made the statement in a message on the occasion of nineteenth International Mother Language Day.

She quoted wonderful words of Nelson Mandela, “If you talk to a man in a language he understands, that goes to his head. If you talk to him in his language that goes to his heart”

UNESCO recognized 21st February as the International Mother Language Day on November 17, 1999.

Audrey Azoulay stressed the significance of this day, urging all member states to observe this day properly.

A dialogue session, entitled ‘My Language, My Resource,’ was reportedly held at the headquarters of UNESCO in Paris at their local time on Wednesday.
