All ‘red buildings’ of British era not heritage: PM

DHAKA: Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Sunday said that there is no necessity to preserve all ‘red buildings’ of the British period in the name of heritage.

She further said that there is a trend to protect many dilapidated buildings and materials of the British period, which is not necessary.

The premier came up with the remarks while talking to the officials of housing and public works ministry in the secretariat during her visit on the day.

Hasina said that some of British works can be protected, if they have architectural value.

According to her, protection of all building structures is not logical.

The PM asked the officials saying that why all ‘red buildings’ need to be protected as the country’s heritage.

We were ruled by the British, said the premier adding that she did not think that protection of the British structures is not necessary at least in an independent country.

She opined that they should not forget that the nation fought against the British colonial rule and sacrificed lives.

The PM also warned the officials concerned to be careful about the preservation so that the art of architecture is not damaged.

Ordering to protect the historic sites, Hasina further said that new construction on a historical place is a violation of rule.

They should keep it in mind before planning and building anything, she added.

The premier also exchanged views with housing and public works minister Mosharraf Hossain and other officials of the ministry there.
