At least nine people were injured in a clash between two groups at the Nagar Bhaban of Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) on Tuesday.
Two of the injured were admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) with serious injuries.
The injured have been identified as Monir Hossain (45), joint secretary of the Nagar Bhaban Trade Union; union member Mohidul Islam (35); Didar (44); Jasim (40); Jewel (45); Obaidul (28); Aziz (46); Uzzal (21); and Shohag (25).
According to Kamal Hossain, organizing secretary of the Nagar Bhaban Trade Union (Reg: 3256), “We had been campaigning to have engineer Ishraq officially take over as mayor. On Tuesday morning, we reported to work as usual. Around 11:45am, a group suddenly attacked us on the ground floor of Nagar Bhaban with local weapons and hammers. We don’t know why the attack happened.”
Doctors at the DMCH emergency department confirmed that nine injured individuals were brought in for treatment. Two of them—Monir Hossain and Mohidul Islam—were admitted due to serious injuries. The rest are under observation, but none are in critical condition, said hospital sources.
The reason behind the attack remains unclear, and law enforcement has yet to release an official statement on the incident.
