Rohingya armed groups in Bangladesh’s refugee camps have paused their internal clashes and united to fight the Arakan Army in Myanmar’s Rakhine State, according to a new report released today (June 18).
The International Crisis Group published the report titled "Bangladesh/Myanmar: The Dangers of a Rohingya Insurgency."
The groups, according to the report, are using religious messages to recruit fighters from the camps, calling for a “jihad” against the Arakan Army. Violence in the camps has decreased since their unity deal in November 2024.
Meanwhile, the Bangladeshi government has started talks with the Arakan Army, which now controls the entire border area. But renewed attacks by Rohingya groups may hurt the chances of refugee repatriation and worsen ethnic tensions in Rakhine.
The report warns that a Rohingya insurgency is unlikely to succeed and urges Bangladesh to curb militant influence in the camps and continue dialogue with the Arakan Army.
