Police must stay focused on duty: IGP

Inspector General of Police (IGP) Baharul Alam has said that crime control and ensuring public safety are key duties of the police, and officers must stay fully focused while performing them.

He made the remarks on Wednesday (June 18) at the monthly crime review meeting for May 2025, held at the Bangladesh Police Auditorium in Rajarbagh, Dhaka, addressing senior officials of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP).

The IGP said DMP is a vital unit of Bangladesh Police, and the public expects the highest level of professionalism and service from it. He instructed officers to remain alert and prepared while on mobile duty, guard duty, or diplomatic assignments.

He strictly warned that using mobile phones at duty posts is prohibited, as it distracts officers and hampers their responsibilities.

Referring to the upcoming national election, the IGP said every member of DMP must be mentally prepared to help ensure a free and fair election.

DMP Commissioner Sheikh Md Sajjat Ali also spoke at the meeting.

He stressed the need for quick identification and arrest of criminals based on intelligence. All units, including Detective Branch (DB), must work more effectively to ensure the safety of city residents.

He added that DMP is ready to face any challenge and must perform election duties with complete neutrality to ensure a peaceful and festive voting environment.

During the meeting, the DMP commissioner awarded officers from different ranks for their outstanding work in law enforcement and public safety during May.
