The government has started the process to bring back around 100 of its citizens stranded in Iran amid ongoing military conflict between Iran and Israel.
Nazrul Islam, Alternative Foreign Secretary disclosed this matter while speaking to reporters at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Thursday (June 19).
He said about 100 Bangladeshis names has been updated and preparations are underway to ensure their safe return.
“We are working on how to bring them back safely through a third country. Once they are moved to a safe location, arrangements will be made to fly them home,” he added.
Nazrul Islam said the Bangladeshi ambassador to Iran has confirmed that all embassy officials and their families have moved to safe locations and are unharmed. The embassy is in regular contact with stranded citizens and is providing necessary assistance.
He said repatriation may be arranged through countries like Turkey or Pakistan—whichever is more convenient and secure.
In response to a question, Nazrul Islam said there were about 400 Bangladeshis in Tehran, of whom 100 have contacted the embassy so far.
“As we have launched a hotline, more may reach out. Although the internet is down, telephone lines seem to be working,” he said.
He also mentioned that there are around 2,000 Bangladeshis in Bandar Abbas and other cities who are currently not in affected zones. However, if they need help in the future, support will be provided.
Regarding financial challenges, Nazrul said sending money to Iran remains complicated.
“We have some funds in the embassy and one of our officers is heading to Iran to carry additional funds. We are also seeking help from friendly countries,” he added.
