Oil-laden cargo catches fire in Narayanganj, 8 burnt

At least eight workers sustained burn injuries as a fire broke out at an oil-laden cargo on Shitalakshya River in Rupganj upazila of Narayanganj early Sunday.

The incident took place in Dorikandi area around 2:30 am.

The burn victims are - ship staff A. Mannan Rahad (23), Humayun Kabir (54), Tajul Islam Limon (24), Imtiaz Ahmed (42), Rubel (38), Sohel (38), Nazmul (33), and Rakib (24).

They were admitted to the burn unit of Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH), said Ichhapura river police outpost in-charge Mahbubur Rahman.

He said the fire broke out at the oil-laden cargo named Shanghai around 2:30am when it reached Dorikandi. The flames rose 20 to 30 feet and all the workers were burnt in the fire.

Being informed, Fire Services personnel went to the spot and managed to douse the blaze.

The cargo manager Akber Ali went into hiding soon after the incident.
