At least 16 people were killed and 30 others injured as a bus fell into a ditch in Kutubpur of Shibchar upazila of Madaripur on Sunday (March 19) morning.

The identities of the deceased could not be known immediately.

The accident took place near Pachchar area of the approach road to Padma Bridge.

Shibchar Highway police station officer-in-charge (OC) Abu Nayeem Mohammad Mofazzel confirmed the news.

Quoting locals, he said, " A Dhaka-bound bus of 'Emad Paribahan' fell into a roadside ditch in Kutubpur losing control on the Dhaka-Mawa-Bhanga expressway. Till 8:15 am, a total of 14 bodies were pulled out from the bus. Two others died on way to hospital."

The death toll may rise as the rescue operation was underway, police officials further added.
