Abdur Rahman Biswas laid to rest

DHAKA: Former President of the country Abdur Rahman Biswas was buried at Banani graveyard in the capital city on Saturday (November 04).

He was buried there at about 6:00 pm after his fifth Namaz-e-Janaza offered at Gulshan Azad Mosque after Asr prayers.

The first Namaz-e-Janaza of the ex-President was held on the Barisal Zilla School premises in the morning. His body was brought there by helicopter.

After the Namaz-e-Janaza in Barisal, Abdur Rahman Biswas’ body was taken in Dhaka. His second Namaz-e-Janaza was held in front of BNP’s Nayapaltan central office at noon, while third one on the High Court premises at about 3:00 pm and fourth one at the north plaza of the Jatiya Sangsad building at about 4:00 pm  

Abdur Rahman Biswas died at a city hospital on Friday night (November 03) at the age of 91.

He had long been suffering from old-age complications. He fell seriously ill in the evening at his Banani’s Grand President Palace residence, and was taken to the United Hospital where doctors declared him dead.

Abdur Rahman Biswas was the 14th President of Bangladesh serving during the 1991-1996 tenure of BNP.

Born at Shaistabad village in Barisal on September o1 in 1926, he received school and college education in his hometown and obtained BA (Honours) and MA degree in History as well as LLB from Dhaka University.

He was elected member of the East Pakistan Legislative Assembly in 1962 and again in 1965. He worked as Parliamentary Secretary of East Pakistan from 1965 to 1969.

He was elected President of Barisal Bar Association in 1974 and again in 1976, and was also elected Chairman of Barisal Municipality in 1977.

Abdur Rahman Biswas was elected MP in 1979 and served as jute minister (1979-80) with President Ziaur Rahman and as health minister (1981-82) with President Justice Abdus Sattar.

He was Speaker of the fifth Parliament on April 4 in 1991. After the reintroduction of the parliamentary system of government, he was elected President on October 8 in 1991.
