Postponement of election will lead to rise of fascism: Salahuddin

BNP Standing Committee Member Salahuddin Ahmed has said that delaying the upcoming national parliamentary election could pave the way for the rebirth of fascism, calling it “in no way desirable.”

Speaking at a discussion held at the Engineers Institution Auditorium, organized by the National Democratic Party (NDP) to mark its 37th founding anniversary, Salahuddin emphasized the importance of adhering to constitutional and legal processes.

“None of us have the right to change the country’s Constitution without following proper legal procedures,” he said. “If such actions occur, demands to amend the Constitution may repeatedly arise in the future.”

Salahuddin said that the people play a crucial role in expressing their will through mass movements. “Yes, the people’s desire is final, and it was expressed through the July mass uprising. While the interim government has been formed as desired, it was done following Article 106 of the Constitution and the Supreme Court’s opinion, making it a legitimate process,” he clarified.

On the issue of the Proportional Representation (PR) system, the BNP leader questioned its feasibility. “Can we demand a system that 56 percent of the people of Bangladesh don’t even understand? None should confuse the nation on this matter,” he said.

Salahuddin urged all political actors to return to the right path to safeguard the interests of the Bangladeshi people. He further stressed that the next election should adhere to the July Charter, with its constitutional aspects implemented by the next parliament through proper amendment.

The event was presided over by NDP Chairman Abdullah Al Harun. Other speakers included Gono Adhikar Parishad General Secretary Rashed Khan, Jatiya Ganatantrik Party President Khandkar Lutfur Rahman, and Bangladesh Samyabadi Dal General Secretary Syed Nurul Islam.
