China, Bangladesh mark 50 years, pledge stronger ties

Chinese President Xi Jinping and Bangladesh President Mohammed Shahabuddin on Saturday exchanged messages of congratulations marking the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries, reaffirming their commitment to strengthening a partnership built on mutual trust, respect, and shared development goals.

In his message, President Xi described China and Bangladesh as “traditional friendly neighbours” with a longstanding history of exchanges.

Over the past half-century, he said, the two nations have maintained strong and steady relations based on the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence, setting a model of mutual respect, equality, and win–win cooperation despite shifts in the global and regional landscape.

Xi noted that recent years have seen both sides deepen political trust, advance high-quality Belt and Road cooperation, and expand collaboration across multiple sectors.

He expressed his readiness to work with President Shahabuddin to use the milestone anniversary as a new starting point for furthering traditional friendship, enhancing mutually beneficial cooperation, and promoting shared development — to deliver greater benefits to both peoples and contribute to global peace and progress.

President Shahabuddin, in his message, praised the enduring friendship between Bangladesh and China over the past 50 years, built on mutual respect, trust, and close cooperation that has brought tangible benefits to both nations. He commended China’s significant role in fostering regional peace, stability, and prosperity, and expressed appreciation for Beijing’s sustained support for Bangladesh’s long-term development.

He voiced confidence that with the continued efforts of both governments and peoples, bilateral cooperation would achieve even greater results in the years ahead.

Also on Saturday, Chinese Premier Li Qiang and Bangladesh’s interim Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus exchanged congratulatory messages.

Premier Li said China attaches great importance to its relations with Bangladesh and looks forward to using the 50th anniversary as an opportunity to advance high-quality Belt and Road projects, broaden cooperation in various fields, and further strengthen the comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership.

Chief Adviser Yunus noted that since the establishment of diplomatic ties five decades ago, the friendship between the two nations has continued to flourish, producing steady progress and fruitful outcomes.

He reaffirmed Bangladesh’s commitment to deepening the comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership and achieving new milestones in bilateral cooperation.
