Khagrachhari unrest fueled by India, fascism: Home Adviser

Home Affairs Adviser Lieutenant General (retd.) Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury has said that incidents in Khagrachhari are being fueled by India and fascist elements, but the government is taking all-out measures to prevent further unrest.

He made the remarks on Monday (September 29) while addressing as chief guest at the foundation stone laying ceremony of police station buildings in Adabor, Kadamtali, Bhashantek, Ramna, and Rampura in the capital.

“A vested quarter is trying to destabilize the situation in Khagrachhari. Our country is now celebrating the biggest religious festival of the Hindu community. We have made all necessary preparations to ensure the festival is observed peacefully. But a group is attempting to disrupt this festival and prevent it from being celebrated with enthusiasm,” he said.

The adviser said that the Chittagong Hill Tracts Affairs Adviser is on the ground monitoring the situation, having already held discussions with law enforcement agencies and local leaders. “At present, the situation is fairly satisfactory,” he noted.

Referring to recent attacks, he said: “You know, some terrorists fired shots from the hills. Often, these weapons come from outside the country. To counter this, we will need everyone’s support and cooperation.”

He urged citizens to ensure that the ongoing religious festival continues without any disruption. “Nobody should create chaos or block roads during this time. I ask everyone to extend their support so the festival can be celebrated smoothly,” he added.
