Three cases filed over Khagrachhari violence

Police have filed three cases in connection with recent violent incidents in Khagrachhari Sadar and Guimara upazilas, triggered during protests over allegations of the sexual assault of a minor.

One case has been lodged at Khagrachhari Sadar Police Station, and two separate cases at Guimara Police Station. The charges include murder, attacks on police, vandalism, and violation of Section 144 of the Penal Code.

At Khagrachhari Sadar, authorities filed a case naming 600–700 unidentified individuals for rioting, destruction of property, and assaults on law enforcement under Section 144.

Meanwhile, the two cases at Guimara involve allegations of murder and attacks on police, with 250–300 unidentified people listed as suspects. Guimara Police Chief Enamul Haque Chowdhury confirmed that the situation in the upazila is now under control.

The suspect in the sexual assault case, Shoyon Sheel, was sent to jail on Wednesday afternoon following a six-day police remand, Khagrachhari Sadar Police Chief Abdul Baten Mridha said.

By Thursday morning, coinciding with the weekly market day, locals from both the hill and Bengali communities returned to the markets and streets.

Traffic flow has resumed, shops are open, and the overall situation is reported as calm, although Section 144 remains in effect.
