Bangladesh’s Meteorological Department has warned that strong winds of up to 60 kilometres per hour could sweep across 10 regions of the country, prompting authorities to issue cautionary signals for river ports.
In a forecast issued on Thursday (Oct 2), meteorologist Md. Tariful Newaz Kabir said temporary gusts accompanied by rain or thunderstorms are likely over Dhaka, Faridpur, Madaripur, Khulna, Barishal, Patuakhali, Noakhali, Cumilla, Chattogram and Cox’s Bazar.
River ports in these areas have been advised to hoist cautionary signal number one.
The weather office said a low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal has intensified into a well-marked low and subsequently developed into a depression.
It remains over the same area and could further strengthen into a deep depression as it moves north-northwest.
Monsoon activity is currently strong over Bangladesh and remains active across the northern Bay.
Widespread rain and thunderstorms are also expected in Rangpur, Rajshahi, Mymensingh, Dhaka, Khulna, Barishal, Chattogram and Sylhet divisions, with heavy to very heavy rainfall likely in some places.
Daytime temperatures may drop by two to three degrees Celsius, while night-time temperatures are expected to decrease slightly.
