Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus returned to Dhaka on Wednesday (October 2) morning, wrapping up a nine-day visit to New York where he attended the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).

An Emirates Airlines commercial flight carrying Prof Yunus and his delegation landed at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport at 9am, his Deputy Press Secretary Abul Kalam Azad Majumder confirmed. 

The flight had departed John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York late Tuesday night.

Bangladesh’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Salahuddin Noman Chowdhury, and Ambassador to the United States, Tareq Md Ariful Islam, saw him off at the airport.

During the visit, Prof Yunus delivered his address to the UNGA on September 26. He also spoke at the “Opening Session of the High-Level Conference on the Situation of the Rohingya Muslims and Other Minorities in Myanmar” on September 30.

On September 29, the Chief Adviser held talks with UN Secretary-General António Guterres, and later met UNHCR High Commissioner Filippo Grandi, as well as UN Under-Secretary-General Rabab Fatima, who oversees issues concerning Least Developed Countries, Landlocked Developing Countries, and Small Island Developing States.

Prof Yunus also attended a reception hosted by U.S. President Donald Trump, where he invited the American leader to visit Bangladesh. In addition, he held bilateral meetings with leaders of several countries, including the Netherlands, Pakistan, Bhutan and Kosovo.

Prof Yunus had departed Dhaka for New York on September 22 to take part in the UNGA session.
