A Dhaka court today sent former Additional IGP Md Iqbal Bahar to jail in connection with the 2023 murder of hawker Shahinur Begum during a student protest in Jatrabari.

Police produced the former Additional IGP before the court of Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) with a prayer for confining him into jail till the end of investigation into the case. 

After hearing the petition, Metropolitan Magistrate (MM) Jewel Rana, on behalf of the CMM, ordered to send him to jail custody

He was arrested Friday by the Detective Branch from Baily Road. 

The court ordered his detention pending investigation. Shahinur was shot while helping protesters and died weeks later. 

A case was filed against 297 individuals, including Iqbal Bahar.
