The Election Commission (EC) following a court directive has reinstated the registration of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami along with its symbol Daripalla (scale).
EC Secretary Akhtar Ahmed on Tuesday (June 24) sent an official letter to the BG Press instructing the printing of the relevant gazette notification.
According to the letter, the EC has canceled its earlier notification dated October 28, 2018, which had revoked Jamaat-e-Islami’s registration. The party’s registration and symbol have now been restored in line with a recent court order.
The Islamist party was originally registered in 2008 as the 14th political party in the country. However, the EC canceled its registration in 2018, based on a High Court verdict issued in 2013, during the tenure of the then Awami League-led government that came to power following a mass uprising.
Prior to that, in 2016, the EC had also scrapped Jamaat’s electoral symbol “scale” through an administrative order issued by the Supreme Court.
Following the latest court directive, the EC has now officially re-recognized Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami as a registered political party, reinstating both its name and electoral symbol.
