Ishraque supporters resume protest at Nagar Bhaban

After a two-day holiday, supporters of BNP leader Ishraque Hossain resumed protests at Nagar Bhaban, accusing the government of blocking his DSCC mayorship and advisers of defying court orders.

The protest began around 11 am, as supporters set up a stage in front of the building and chanted slogans, demanding that Ishraque be sworn in as DSCC mayor.

They warned that the lock on Nagar Bhaban would remain until Ishraque officially assumes office.

The DSCC election was held on February 1, 2020, in which ruling Awami League candidate Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh was declared the winner.

Later, BNP’s Ishraque filed a case on March 3, alleging election irregularities.

Following the July 2024 uprising and the fall of the Awami League government, the Election Tribunal annulled the previous results on March 27, 2025, and declared Ishraque the winner.

The Election Commission published a gazette on April 27 confirming his mayorship.

However, a writ petition was filed on May 14 to block his swearing-in.

Though the High Court has since dismissed the petition, the Local Government Ministry has yet to proceed with the oath ceremony, citing legal issues.

Protests have continued since May 15, paralyzing operations at DSCC Nagar Bhaban.
