AL district-level organizational programme suffers setback

DHAKA: The ruling Awami League’s organizational regeneration drive appears to have lost gear, as its top leaders’ district tours and extended meetings remained half-done.

After holding meetings in 52 districts, the programme now got stuck-up, party sources said.

Awami League organising secretary Ahmed Hossain told, “There is possibility of holding extended meetings in the rest of the districts soon.”

On March 18, Awami League launched a month-long tour programme to resolve internal disputes in its district units over sharing power.

The party is driven by internal disputes among its ranks, ranging from local leaders to lawmakers, some AL leaders said, taking exception to different incidents that hit headlines.

Fifteen central teams, mostly led by presidium members, started visiting districts to hold extended meetings of the party`s district units and settle organisational problems.

The month-long programme also included recruitment of new members and renewal of primary memberships.

One of the presidium members of the party, however, alleged that the visit of the central leaders failed to improve the situation in some districts. Lack of coordination among ruling-party lawmakers, leaders and workers in many districts across the country is also affecting party activities, he said.

The internal crisis facing the party could not be resolved overnight, said a central leader who participated in the district-tour programme.

Asked whether any extended meeting will be held in the capital, City Awami League general secretary Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury Maya was reluctant to make any comment on the matter.
