UN prying ways for elections

DHAKA: United Nations (UN) has been trying to mediate for a consensus among the political parties of Bangladesh for the next general election keeping incumbent Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in her position.

A competent source from the opposition BNP confirmed the matter to BBC Bangla.

Oscar Fernandez-Taranco, Assistant Secretary-General for Political Affairs of the United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, met with leaders from various parties and representatives of civil society of the country with the view to end the ongoing political deadlock over the next parliamentary elections.

Wishing anonymity, source from BNP said that Oscar Fernandez-Taranco is trying to find out the solution within the Constitution.

In this formula, Sheikh Hasina will be the head of the polls-time government but the UN will send a large group of observers to ensure a free and fair election, source added.

The source also said BNP did not show any disagreement in talks over the proposed formula of the UN.

But publicly BNP’s stand is they won not participate in the election without a non-party caretaker government.
