More electricity more development: PM

DHAKA: Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Sunday said more production of electricity will move the country towards more development.

She was addressing an inaugural ceremony of 315-MW electricity from four plants at different places of the country through video conference from her official residence Ganabhaban in the afternoon.

According to the PM, 70 percent people of the country are now getting electricity.

‘Although we initiated many projects, all were stopped when BNP came to power in 2001.’

‘We have implemented many projects since assuming power in second and third terms,’ the premier added.

Upholding her government’s achievement Sheikh Hasina said, ‘The country is currently producing 7,171-MW of electricity though it has achieved the capacity of generating 13,200-MW’.

‘We have also begun to supply electricity through installations of solar plants in the areas where electricity grid is not available.’

In the meantime, the country has bought 500-MW electricity from India, said the PM adding, ‘We will procure more 500-MW electricity from India soon. We are taking the initiative to import more 1000 or 2000-MW electricity from the neighboring country.’
