3 of a family burnt in septic tank fire

SYLHET: A woman, her son and daughter sustained burn injuries when a fire broke out from toxic gas of septic tank at their house in the metropolitan Friday late night.

The injured were identified as Monwar Begum, 45, wife of late Zakir Hosssain, her daughter Zahida Akter, 20, and her son Zahir Hosssain, 14.

Fire Service and Civil Defense station officer Zabed Hossain of Sylhet confirmed the matter to banglanews.

As there was load shedding in the area, Zahida went to toilet around 11:15pm, holding a candle. When she uncovered the commode subsequently gas from septic tank caused a fire and soon spread out to their flat.

Hearing their hue and cry, neighbors rushed in and informed fire fighters. They, however, had managed to douse the flame before the fire fighters reached the spot.

The injured were rushed to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital. Later, they were referred to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital for better treatment, said on-duty doctor Omar Farukh of MAG Osmani Hospital.

Monwara and Zahida have sustained 60 percent burns at their bodies.

The fire damaged furniture and valuables of the house worth about Tk 1 lakh, said fire service officer Zabed Hossain.
