Country faces major power outage

DHAKA: Most parts of the country went through a major outage on Saturday due to national grid failure after the Bangladesh-India power interconnection line had tripped at Bheramara in Kushtia district.

Power supply from all the plants remained suspended all across the country since 11:30am. Though power was restored at different palaces but it went vain within few minutes.

State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Nasrul Hamid Bipu told banglanews that the outage began when the Bangladesh-India power interconnection line tripped at Bheramara 450MW Combined Cycle Power Station in Kushtia in the morning.

Banglanews Correspondents report about the outage from the country’s different places. The outage caused extreme sufferings to people across the country. Internet and cable TV connections were off in the most areas of the country.

However, the power supply of Karnaphuli Hydroelectric Power Station in Kaptai Lake was restored several hours after the outage began.

Banglanews readers called over phone to the newsroom repeatedly and asked about the reasons behind the outage.

A total of six units of Ghorashal Power Station, nine units of Ashuganj Power Station and seven units of Chittagong Power Station stopped generating power.

Along with other hospitals, Dhaka Medical College and Hospital and Shah Jalal International Airport were able to continue operating unaffected, with alternative power supply.

Our District correspondents from Sirajganj, Feni, Gazipur, Natore and many other districts reported that all districts had been fencing power outages since the morning.

Mahabubur Rahman Munna, Banglanews Staff Correspondent in Khunla, reported a total of 21 districts in the country’s southern parts had gone under power outage.

Banglanews Staff Correspondent in Sylhet Nasir Uddin added that power blackout hit the district at 11:29am on Saturday.

When contacted to Power Grid Company of Bangladesh (PGCB) managing director Masum Al Biruni told banglanews that the power transmission and distribution had stopped.

He added: “We are not sure when the power supply will become normal.”
