PM for immediate rescue of Buriganga

DHAKA: Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Sunday asked the authorities concerned to take immediate actions to make the Buriganga River pollution free and begin its renovation works.

The premier came up with the direction at a meeting related to the project of circular roadway and waterway around Dhaka City and rescue of the city’s rivers at her office on the day.

Sheikh Hasina presided over the meeting.

Finance Minister AMA Muhithm, Industries Minister Amir Hossain Amu, Local Government and Rural Development and Cooperative Minister Syed Ashraful Islam, Civil Aviation and Tourism Minister Rashed Khan Menon, Water Resources Minister Anisul Islam Mahmud, Communications Minister Obaidul Quader, Shipping Minister Shahjahan Khan, Environment and Forest Minister Anwar Hossain Manju, Land Minister Shamsur Rahman Sharif, Finance and Planning State Minister MA Mannan and State Minister for Home Affairs Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal were among others present at the meeting.

Cabinet Secretary Muhammad Musharraf Hossain, Army Chief General Iqbal Karim Bhuiyan, PM’s Principal Secretary Abdus Sobhan Sikdar and her press secretary AKM Shamim Chowdhury were, among others, also present at the meeting.

After the meeting, AKM Shamim briefed details to journalists regarding the meeting.

Shamim said, “The PM asked the authorities concerned to make the Buriganga river contamination free and rescue it soon.”

The shipping ministry would launch a circular waterway round the Dhaka City, which will cover Ashulia, Aminbazar, Sadargaht, Fatulla, Kanchpur, and Tongi, he added.

Shamim said, “Roads and Highways Department and Water Development Board in association with Bangladesh Army will build a circular four-lane roods, including the Eastern Bypass road.”

“The Prime Minster’s Office will supervise the project implementation works,” he added.

Shamim said, “The premier told the meeting that positive change will come, if this project is implemented; we took this project and we have to do it, passenger and goods transportation will be easier, if circular roadway and waterway is built.”
