BD housemaid burnt in Jordan

NARAYANGANJ: A woman, who is suffering burn injuries as her employer set her on fire in Jordan, returned home and undergoing treatment at Narayanganj 300-bed hospital on Wednesday.

34-year-old Mariam Begun, mother of a child, of Sayedpur area of the city, flew to Jordan on April 14, 2014 for a housemaid job.

Lying on the hospital bed, ailing Mariam told banglanews that she gave a total of Tk 90,000 and submitted her passport to manpower recruiting agency Al-Rabeta International (Marhaba Tours and Travels), located in Fakirapool area of the capital, via manpower agent Delowar Hossain last year.

But the agency sent her to Jordan on April 24, 2014 using a fake passport of one Parvin Begum on which the name of Parvin’s husband was mentioned as Moktar Mian of Sirajganj.

On arrival at Jordan, Mariam got a job in a police official’s house but the house owner refused to appoint her; as a result she was employed at another house.

On April 8 this year, her employer went to renew the Iqama (work permits) and found the passport a fake one. After returning home, the house owner set fire to her body pouring combustible substances, leaving Mariam severely injured.

Following the day, the employer sent her back to home on April 9 and she was admitted at the hospital on Thursday morning.

Hospital’s emergency department physician Dr. Nazimuddin told banglanews “Parts of her back and legs has been burnt, she was giving treatment at the hospital.”

When contacted, Al-Rabeta director Mossarof Hossain said “Agent Delwar is her husband, she was sent to Jordan with the passport that they submitted, and even the woman (Mariam) introduced herself to immigration officer as Parvin.”

They were not responsible in this regard, claimed Mossarof.

Quite the opposite, Marian told that she had no kinship relation to Delwar, paid the money to go to Jordan via the man.
