The Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) has forecast very heavy rainfall in Rangpur and Rajshahi divisions, even as the land depression over Odisha and adjoining areas has weakened into a well-marked low.
Other parts of the country are also likely to experience light to moderate rain.
In a weather bulletin issued on Saturday (October 4), meteorologist A.K.M. Nazmul Haque said the weakened low-pressure system is now located over Jharkhand and nearby regions and may gradually move northeastwards, losing strength further. Its associated trough extends up to the North Bay of Bengal.
The southwest monsoon remains active over northern Bangladesh and moderately active elsewhere, while it is in a moderate state over the North Bay, the department said.
According to the forecast valid until Sunday (October 5) morning, most areas in Rangpur and Rajshahi divisions and many places in Mymensingh, Dhaka, Khulna, Barishal, Chattogram, and Sylhet divisions may experience light to moderate rain or thundershowers accompanied by temporary gusty winds.
Heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely in isolated areas of Rangpur and Rajshahi. Day and night temperatures are expected to remain nearly unchanged across the country.
For the following 24 hours from Sunday morning, the BMD predicts similar conditions, with light to moderate rain or thundershowers likely in many places across the country.
Isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall may occur in parts of Rangpur, Rajshahi, Dhaka, Mymensingh, and Khulna divisions. Day and night temperatures could fall slightly during this period.
