2 killed in separate incidents in Khulna

Two people were killed and two others injured in two separate violent incidents that occurred Thursday night (June 26) in Khulna.

One of the incidents took place in Rajapur village of Ruphsa upazila, where a youth named Sabbir, 27, was shot dead and two others were injured in a reported gunfight among criminal groups.

According to Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Ruphsa Police Station Mahfuzur Rahman, top-listed criminal and drug syndicate leader known as "Grenade Babu" and his two close associates—Kaua Miraj and Sabbir—were involved in the incident.

The gunfight reportedly broke out around 8:00pm at the house of another suspected drug trader, Sohag, in the Rajapur area under Aichgati Union. Sabbir died on the spot, while Kaua Miraj, who was also shot, took treatment at a private clinic at gunpoint before fleeing. Another associate, Saddam, was shot in the head and later transferred from Khulna Medical College Hospital to Dhaka for advanced treatment.

Police recovered six empty cartridges, four live bullets, some yaba tablets, drug-taking equipment, and an object resembling a grenade from the scene near Sabbir’s body.

Meanwhile, in a separate incident on the same night, a businessman named Babul Dutta, 50, was killed by unidentified criminals in the city’s Horintana area.

The incident happened around 10:00pm at the South Para area of Rajbandh under Horintana Police Station.

The deceased was the son of Amulya Dutta, a resident of the same area.

Quoting locals, police said Babul was returning home on a motorcycle when several attackers intercepted him. They reportedly took him to an empty plot nearby, slit his throat, and left the scene after confirming his death. Police were informed around 10:30pm.

Horintana Police Station’s OC Sheikh Khairul Bashar confirmed that Babul was murdered with a sharp weapon.

“It is not yet clear why he was killed,” he said.

The body was sent to Khulna Medical College Hospital for autopsy following preliminary investigations, the official added.

Khulna police said legal action is underway in both cases.
