Dhaka metro rail resumes after Eid break; meat transport prohibited

Metro rail services in Dhaka resumed on Saturday (June 8) after a one-day suspension for the Eid-ul-Azha holiday, with new restrictions in place regarding the transport of meat and animal products.

According to the Dhaka Mass Transit Company Limited (DMTCL), trains began operating from 8:00 am on a 30-minute interval schedule.

The service will continue on a public holiday timetable from Monday (June 9) until further notice.

In a notice issued earlier on June 3, DMTCL announced that the carrying of raw or cooked meat, as well as sacrificial animal hides, is strictly prohibited on metro trains.

The directive, signed by Director (Administration) A.K.M. Khairul Alam, also stated that passengers found violating this rule will be denied entry to the stations.

Security has been instructed to enforce the restriction stringently. All commuters will be subject to thorough checks at every station gate.

The move comes as authorities anticipate a rise in the transport of sacrificial meat following the Eid-ul-Azha festivities, raising concerns over hygiene and cleanliness in the metro system.
