PARLIAMENT BUILDING: The proposed ‘Cantonments Act Bill 2017’ has been placed in the Parliament with the view of making ‘The Cantonment Act, 1924’ more effective.  

Law Minister Anisul Huq placed the bill in the current session of the 10th Parliament on Tuesday (November 14).

The Speaker sent the bill to parliamentary standing committee on Ministry of Defense for examining and scrutinizing. The committee will scrutinize the bill within 30 days.

MP Fakhrul Imam of Jatiya Party raised objecting to this bill, but his objection was nullified through verbal voting.

Speaker Dr. Shirin Sharmin Choudhury was chairing in the session.

In the statement of purpose and reason, it was laid out that administration of cantonments is regulated by Cantonment Act of 1924. Its English language translated laws were made during British and Pakistani periods.

Given the current situation and context, proposals are submitted for the Cantonment Act of 1924 is to be updated while Cantonment Law 2017 to be drafted.
