Court sets Nov 30 for Sagar-Runi murder case report

A Dhaka court today set November 30 for submission of the investigation report in the sensational murder case of journalist couple Sagar Sarowar and Meherun Runi.

This marks the 121st delay in submitting the report since the case began. The report was scheduled for submission today, but as the investigation officer failed to comply, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Minhajul Islam fixed a new date.

Police Sub-Inspector Rafiqul Islam Russell, officer of the general registration branch of Mirpur Model Police Station, confirmed the matter to BSS.

Sagar and Runi were brutally murdered at their rented flat in the capital’s West Rajabazar area on February 11, 2012, in the presence of their four-year-old son, Mahir Sarwar Megh. Runi’s brother, Nawser Alam, later filed the case with Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station.

The investigation was first assigned to the Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) and later transferred to the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB). Despite being granted time on 111 occasions over 12 years, RAB failed to submit the probe report.

On September 30, 2024, the High Court ordered the Ministry of Home Affairs to form a high-powered task force to investigate the case, removing RAB from the charge. Subsequently, on October 23, 2024, the government formed a four-member task force tasked with completing the investigation and submitting findings within six months.
