Election Reform Commission chief Badiul Alam Majumdar today said that free and fair elections in Bangladesh are only possible through political consensus.
He made the remarks while addressing a discussion as the chief guest at the Gangni Upazila Parishad auditorium in Meherpur this morning.
Highlighting electoral reform, Majumdar said the lower house should be based on constituencies, while the upper house could follow the proportional representation (PR) system. “Both systems have positive and negative aspects, but we believe this arrangement is necessary,” he noted.
The discussion, organized by The Hunger Project Bangladesh’s PFG, was attended by youth leaders and local representatives of SHUJAN. Majumdar, also the secretary of SHUJAN, exchanged views with participants on various aspects of election system reform.
Chief Adviser’s Special Assistant Monir Haidar was present at the event.
