National Safe Road Day being observed

DHAKA: The National Safe Road Day 2019 is being observed on Tuesday (Oct 22) for the third time across the country with the aim to ensure safety on roads with the slogan: ‘Jiboner Age Jibika Noy, Sarak Durghatana Ar Noy’ (Livelihood is not before life, no more road accident).

A colorful rally was brought out from South Plaza of the Jatiya Sangsad to mark the day where different government and non-government organisations took part. 

The awareness rally began at around 7:45am in the South Plaza of the Parliament House. The rally was ended in the south plaza of the Parliament building, after parading through Manik Mia road.

Various organizations including Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA), Dhaka Metropolitan Police, Highway Police, Safe Road Chain Movement, Bangladesh Roads and Highways Department participated in the rally

The participants wore a blue t-shirt and red cap on their head. Also, almost all attendees of the rally were seen carrying various banners and festoons of awareness.

After the rally, Ilias Kanchan, founder and chairman of Nirapad Sarak Chai (Nischa) said everyone has to be very careful on the road. The Owner Transport Association has to perform their duties. The Workers Transport Association has to take their responsibility. Members of the legislative body must also perform their duties properly. Besides, we all need to be aware. Only then our roads will be safe.

Additional Inspector General of Police (IGP-Highway) Mahbubur Rahman, who attended the rally, said, "Our goal is to make the road safe and risk free. We are working towards that. Our awareness has increased a lot more than ever before. But we don't want to loss of life anymore in road”.

Later, a discussion is being held at Krishibid Institution Bangladesh (KIB) auditorium at 10 am. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is addressing the function as the chief guest.

On the eve of the day, President Md Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina issued separate messages on the eve of the National Road Safety Day.
