Bangladesh’s one-day side will attempt to halt a prolonged slump when it opens a three-match ODI series against West Indies at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur on Saturday (October 18), with the day-night match scheduled to begin at 1:30 pm local time.
The hosts arrive from a chastening tour of the UAE, where Afghanistan swept them 3–0, sealing the series on October 14 with a 200-run victory after bowling Bangladesh out for 93 in 27.1 overs. The whitewash underlined recurring batting frailties: Bangladesh failed to bat out 50 overs in any of the three games.
Despite those setbacks, Bangladesh can point to a sturdier record at home. In their last ODI series on Bangladeshi soil, played in March 2024, they beat Sri Lanka 2–1 in Chattogram—evidence that familiar conditions can still tilt contests their way.
Historical precedent also offers a measure of encouragement. On West Indies’ previous ODI tour of Bangladesh in January 2021, the home side won the series 3–0, with victories in Mirpur and Chattogram. Overall, West Indies hold the edge in the rivalry, leading the head-to-head 24–21 in 47 completed ODIs, with two no-results.
Even so, recent form makes today’s opener more than a routine fixture. For Bangladesh, it is a chance to restore confidence and break a pattern of series defeats stretching back to late last year, while West Indies will look to press their advantage and extend their overall lead in the match-up. The setting—Mirpur’s spin-friendly surface—adds intrigue, with both teams likely to lean on slow bowling resources as they seek early control of the series.
