Portugal preserved their perfect start to World Cup qualifying with a 1–0 victory over the Republic of Ireland in Lisbon on Saturday (October 11), as Rúben Neves headed the winner in stoppage time to keep Roberto Martínez’s side five points clear at the top of Group F.

The midfielder’s first goal in 60 senior internationals arrived in the 90+1st minute at the Estádio José Alvalade and settled a night in which the hosts were repeatedly frustrated by Ireland’s resistance.

Cristiano Ronaldo saw a 75th-minute penalty saved by Caoimhin Kelleher and twice went close from open play, as Nathan Collins marshalled a disciplined Irish back line.

But Portugal’s pressure finally told when substitute Francisco Trincão swung in a late cross that Neves met ahead of the advancing goalkeeper to break the deadlock.

The result lifts Portugal to nine points at the campaign’s halfway mark and leaves them poised to secure qualification when they host second-placed Hungary on Tuesday. Ireland remain bottom on one point after a third straight defeat.

Neves, who has taken over Portugal’s No. 21 shirt, dedicated his landmark goal to close friend Diogo Jota. The Liverpool and Portugal forward died in a car crash in July, with the national team subsequently confirming the jersey tribute.
