Morocco, Argentina set up U-20 World Cup final after thrillers

Morocco and Argentina will meet in the FIFA U-20 World Cup final after both sides clinched dramatic semi-final victories overnight in Chile.

Argentina advanced first, edging Colombia 1–0 in Santiago. Second-half substitute Mateo Silvetti—an Inter Miami attacker—settled the contest with a 72nd-minute strike, extending the Albiceleste’s bid to add to their record haul of six U-20 titles (last won in 2007).

Independent match reports and club records list the 19-year-old’s surname as Silvetti.

Morocco then made history by reaching their first final, defeating France 5–4 on penalties after a 1–1 draw in Valparaíso. Coach Mohamed Ouahbi sent on third-choice goalkeeper Abdelhakim Mesbahi for the shoot-out; the 20-year-old saved the decisive kick to seal the Atlas Lions’ place in Sunday’s showpiece.

FIFA has listed Morocco’s goalkeeping options at this tournament as Yanis Benchaouch, Ibrahim Gomis and Abdelhakim Mesbahi.

Morocco’s path has been eye-catching: they topped a group that included Brazil and Spain before dispatching the Korea Republic and the United States in the knockouts.

Argentina, meanwhile, overcame fierce South American rivals and outlasted Colombia in a tense semi-final that featured a late red card for the Cafeteros.

The final is scheduled to take place in Chile, which will host the competition from September 27 to October 19.
