Protest in DU area over Avijit murder

DHAKA UNIVERSITY: The Dhaka University (DU) and its adjacent areas have witnessed processions and rallies in phases from Friday morning in protest of the killing of blogger and writer Avijit Roy.

From the rally, the protesting students, teachers, citizens have vowed to resist the militants who are involved in Avijit murder. 

The protesters are also chanting several slogans in the areas. Protesting the murder, black clothes were tied to the eyes of all statues of Razu Sculpture near the TSC.

The Ganajagaran Mancha also took position around 10:30am in city’s Shahbagh area protesting the murder and its spokesperson Dr Imran H Sarkar declared continuous protest till the arrest of killers. 

Professor Robayet Ferdous of DU presided over the rally where professor MM Akash of DU, ex-VC professor Anwar Hossain, professor AJM Shafiuk Alam Bhuiyan of Jahangirnagar University, journalist Kamal Lohani, writer and columnist Syed Abul Maksud, International Crimes Tribunal Prosecutor Rana Das Gupta, Human Rights activist Khushi Kabir, Hamida Hossain, among others, also spoke.

Accusing the militants of the killing, Communist Party president Mujahidul Islam Selim said the killing style made it clear that the militants are the killers of Avijit.

Eminent politician Pankaj Bhattacharya also claimed that the communal gang killed Avijit, adding “The defeated anti-liberation quarters declared new war against the country. They want to make Bangladesh as militant country.

‘To resist the evil forces we all should be united,’ he added.

DU Teacher Association general secretary ASM Maksud Kamal said prominent writer Humayan Azad was also killed in this day 11 years ago at the same place. 

He demanded of boosting the security measures in DU and adjacent areas.

Earlier on Thursday night, Abhijit Roy, 37, was hacked to death and his wife, Rafida Ahamed Banya, 34, injured critically by a group of miscreants at TSC intersection of Dhaka University (DU).
