2-OC among 8-cop suspended in Sylhet

SYLHET: Sylhet Metropolitan Police (SMP) Commissioner M Mizanur Rahman PPM suspended eight of its officials, including two Officers-in-Charge (OCs) on Sunday.

The suspended are Officer-in-Charge of Kotwali Thana Ataur Rahman, Officer-in-Charge (investigation) Shyamol Banik, Sub-Inspector Ashraful Islam, Assistant Sub-Inspector Abu Taher, Constables Adhir Chandra, Rajib Kanti Das, Azadur Rahman and Nazmul Hossain.

Additional Deputy Commissioner (Media) of SMP Rahmat Ullah confirmed the matter to banglanews.

Rahmat Ullah also said the decision was taken as the investigation committee found the officials guilty of torturing Kamal Ahmed Chowdhury, brother of Chhatok municipality mayor Abul Kalam Chowdhury.

He also said OC Ataur Rahman would be transferred to Chittagong Range and OC Shyamol Banik was transferred to Barisal Range.

On July 17, some police officials, including OC Ataur Rahman of SMP tortured Kamal Ahmed Chowdhury, brother of Chhatok municipality mayor Abul Kalam Chowdhury in custody.

Shamim Ahmed Chowdhury, younger brother of Kamal Ahmed Chowdhury, filed a writ petition with the High Court on July 24, regarding the matter.

An HC bench comprising Justice Salma Masud Chowdhury and Justice M Habibul Gani ordered Inspector General of Police and SMP Commissioner to take actions against the accused.

However, the decision came after the report submitted by the four-member committee, led by Deputy Police Commissioner of SMP Akram Hossain.
