UN under sec-gen due Tuesday night

DHAKA: Chief of United Nations (UN) peacekeeping mission and also Under-Secretary-General of UN Hervé Ladsous will arrive here on a three-day official visit on Tuesday night.

Foreign Ministry Director General (Economic Affairs Wing) M Riaz Hamidullah will receive Ladsous at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport, an inter-ministry source of foreign affairs ministry told banglanews.

UN peace chief is scheduled to arrive at 8:40pm, source added.

However, during his stay, Ladsous will meet President Abdul Hamid, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, state minister for foreign affairs M Shahriar Alam and the chiefs of army, navy and air force.

Bangladesh will discuss its ‘issues of interest’ over its participation in the UN peacekeeping operations during the visit of Ladsous.

Members of UN peacekeeping mission from Bangladesh have been serving worldwide for over two decades.

Bangladesh sent a group of 15 army personnel to the UN mission in 1988 first. Gradually, it has been recognized as the most troops sending country to UN.

Currently, 1,830 police and 6,605 army personnel from Bangladesh are serving the operations in the UN peacekeeping missions.

In this regard, Ladsous is likely to highlight the current global situation and to discuss how Bangladesh could more effectively contribute to the peacekeeping missions.

Moreover, Ladsous will also address a seminar, titled ‘Peacekeeping Trends and Challenges’, to be arranged by the foreign ministry at a city hotel on Wednesday afternoon.
