Trial proceedings begin in Abu Sayeed killing

The International Crimes Tribunal-2 on Thursday (August 28) began recording testimony in the war crimes case filed over the killing of Begum Rokeya University (BRUR) student Abu Sayeed during the July uprising.

The testimony is being heard by the judicial panel led by tribunal chairman Justice Nazrul Islam Chowdhury.

Among the 30 accused in the case are former Berobi vice-chancellor Hasibur Rashid and former proctor Shariful Islam. Six of the accused are currently in jail while the remaining 24 are absconding. The government has appointed four lawyers to represent the absconding accused.

Earlier, on August 27, Chief Prosecutor Mohammad Tajul Islam delivered his opening statement to formally commence the trial. OnAugust 6, the tribunal indicted the 30 accused and ordered the trial to begin.

On June 24, the investigation agency submitted its report in the case, naming a total of 62 witnesses.
