Scientist develops zinc-enriched rice variety — GAU Dhan-3 New rice variety — GAU Dhan-3

A new high-yield, zinc-rich variety of rice named GAU Dhan-3 has been developed by Professor Dr Nasreen Akhter Ivy, a breeder at the Department of Genetics and Plant Breeding at Gazipur Agricultural University.

This is the first rice variety registered under the university’s new name and marks the 90th innovation by the institution, signaling new prospects for agricultural advancement in Bangladesh.

GAU Dhan-3 is a premium, aromatic variety enriched with zinc and iron—nutrients vital for boosting immunity, producing hemoglobin, and enhancing energy levels.

It contains 26 percent amylase, which aids carbohydrate digestion, making it especially beneficial for children and pregnant women.

Following four years of research and yield trials across different regions in 2021 and 2022, the variety received approval from the National Seed Board on April 20, 2025, based on results certified by the Seed Certification Agency.

The rice matures in about three months during the Aman season and 3.5 months in the Boro season. It yields 5.5 to 6 tons per hectare—approximately 15 percent higher than conventional varieties. With tall plants, sturdy stems, and abundant straw, it also supports livestock fodder needs.

Professor Dr Nasreen said the new variety bridges the gap between nutrition, agricultural output, and rural livelihoods, offering a “timely solution to malnutrition and mineral deficiencies.”

Gazipur Agricultural University Vice Chancellor Dr GKM Mostafizur Rahman hailed the innovation as a “symbol of excellence” in agricultural research, adding that GAU Dhan-3 would significantly contribute to future food and nutrition security in the country.
