DHAKA: BNP on Sunday (September 1) paid tributes to party founder and slain president Ziaur Rahman by placing a wreath at his grave, marking its 41st founding anniversary.
Party’s secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir along with party leaders and activists placed the wreath at Zia's grave at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar in the capital around 10:00am and offered fateha there.
They also joined a munajat seeking salvation of the departed soul of founder president of BNP and good health of their imprisoned party chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia.
BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, BNP standing committee members, Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, Moudud Ahmed, Dr Abdul Moyeen Khan, Nazrul Islam Khan, Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury, vice chairmen Md Shahjahan, Dr ZM Jahid and joint secretary general Habibun Nabi Khan Sohel were, among others, present.
Leaders and activists of different units and associate bodies of the party also laid wreaths at Zia's grave on the occasion.
BNP and its associate organisations chalked out elaborate programmes to observe party’s founding anniversary amid various programmes, including hoisting party flag at all BNP offices, holding discussions, bringing out colorful rallies, publishing posters and supplements in newspapers.
To mark the day, the party flag was hoisted at the party's Nayapaltan central office and all other party offices across the country at 6am.
BNP is to arrange a discussion at 3pm at the Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh marking the day where BNP senior leaders and eminent personalities are expected to address.
Besides, a colorful rally will be brought out centrally on Monday (September 2) to celebrate the day. It will start from in front of BNP’s Nayapaltan central office around 2pm and after parading different roads in city it will end at Moghbazar intersection.
On this day, on September 1, in 1978, Ziaur Rahman founded the Bangladesh Nationalist Party.
