Nahid slams Jamaat’s PR movement as political manipulation

National Citizens Party (NCP) Convener Nahid Islam on Sunday criticized the so-called “Proportional Representation (PR) Movement” launched by Jamaat-e-Islami, calling it a deliberate political maneuver designed to derail the Consensus Commission’s reform process.

In a Facebook post, Nahid said the movement aimed to divert national dialogue from the real issue: restructuring the state and constitution in line with the people’s uprising. He stressed that the core reform demand, establishing an Upper House based on proportional representation of votes, was intended as a constitutional safeguard and part of the broader legal framework of the July Charter.

Nahid alleged that Jamaat and its allies hijacked the reform agenda, reducing it to a technical PR issue and using it as a bargaining tool for narrow partisan interests. “Their motive was never reform; it was manipulation,” he wrote.

He further criticized Jamaat for not engaging in meaningful reform discourse either before or after the July Uprising, offering no constitutional vision or commitment to a democratic republic. Nahid described their sudden endorsement of reform within the Consensus Commission as tactical infiltration and political sabotage disguised as reformism.

Nahid also said, “The people of Bangladesh now clearly understand this deception and will no longer be misled by false reformists or manipulative actors. Neither the Almighty nor the sovereign people of this land will permit dishonest, opportunistic, and morally bankrupt forces to rule over them.”
