Last tributes paid to Prof Ajoy Roy

DHAKA: People from all walks of life converged at Central Shaheed Minar on Tuesday (Dec 10) to bid a final farewell to Ajoy Roy, Physicist and freedom fighter, also the father of slain popular science writer Avijit Roy.

His cadaver was taken to Shaheed Minar around 11:30am for the people to pay their respects. He received a guard of honour as a Freedom Fighter in the 1971 liberation war.

Prof Ajoy died at the age of 85 in BIRDEM hospital in Dhaka on Monday (Dec 9). He is survived by a son and a daughter.

Born on March 1, 1935 in Dinajpur, Ajoy retired as a professor of physics from Dhaka University in 2009.

Ajoy Roy was awarded with Ekushe Padak in 2012 for his outstanding contribution in the field of education.

As a founder of Ekattorer Ghatak Dalal Nirmul Committee, Ajoy Roy played a key role in the movement for trial of war criminals. 

His son Avijit, a Bangladesh-born US citizen, was stabbed to death on Dhaka University campus when he, along with his wife Rafida Ahmed Bonya, was returning from the book fair on February 26, 2015. Bonya survived the attack.
