COX’S BAZAR: Incessant rain in the last five days has gravely disrupted the daily life of Rohingyas sheltered in the camps of Ukhia and Teknaf upazila of Cox’s Bazar. 

Thousands of shelter centers have been washed away while camps are either inundated in flash flood or destroyed in landslide. Insufficiencies of drinking water with water-borne diseases have stroke the camp inhabitants. On top of all that, broken sanitation system has made the livelihood unbearable to Rohingyas. 

International Organization for Migration (IOM) Cox’s Bazar site management engineer Jahangir Alam told Banglanews that hundreds of unpleasant things have happened in the last fives as heavy rainfall washed away shelters, caused landslide and flood.

According to sources, an average of 145 mm rainfall was recorded in Ukhia and Teknaf from Saturday to Wednesday. The overall damage has not been officially reported yet but some 7 lakh Rohingyas have been affected by the blow. 

According to several human rights watchdog working in the area, communications were cut off and some portions of the Rohingya camps are in isolated condition due to the rain. 

Many shelter centers of Kutupalang and Balukhali camps went under water while a child was killed and several injured in landslides. 

International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) Cox’s Bazar outpost chief Sanjeeb Café told Banglanews Rohingyas are suffering from sanitation and drinking water crisis. Under the circumstances, water-borne diseases are on the rise.
