CHITTAGONG: Sever gas crisis in Chittagong has been hampering productions of several hundreds of factories. Household burners are also remaining shut as supply from Bibiana Gas Field is halted.
The crisis has become acute on Monday.
Productions of heavy industries including of rod and cement, and over 163 small power plants are being hampered.
Expressing their concern Chittagong business and industries organizations leaders said that not only the gas-based middle or heavy industries, the crisis has also been hampering the productions of garment factories.
According to Karnaphuli Gas Distribution Company Limited (KGDCL) data, demand of gas in Chittagong estimated at 480 million cubic feet, but currently they are getting a supply of 250 million cubic feet.
On Monday, KGDCL received the supply of 181 cubic feet gas, adding more sufferings to people and slowing down industrial productions.
KGDCL managing director (Engineering Services) Khandakar Matiur Rahman told banglanews, ‘The crisis has been created due to the lack of gas supply from national grid.’
‘We are trying to solve the problem,’ he added.
Moreover, gas supply to household burners in different areas has been halted, creating sufferings for thousands of residents.
Ashkar Dighir Paar resident and a housewife Mina Dasgupta told banglanews, ‘We are not getting gas supply from Sunday morning. We are buying foods from restaurants’.
Drivers of CNG-run vehicles also expressed their sufferings for the lack of gas supply.
A private car driver Farhad told banglanews that they are waiting at filling stations for several hours in queue but getting no gas.
