DHAKA: Ahead of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Bangladesh, Foreign Minister AH Mahmood Ali Friday said talks on the issue of Teesta Water Sharing Treaty are underway behind the scenes.
The minister was addressing a press conference on the visit of Narendra Modi and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee at the ministry in the city around 11:00am.
Mahmood Ali said that diplomatic efforts are not made public and many of those are kept undisclosed. Discussion on the Teesta water sharing is going on out of one’s sight and they have been working on it.
Nothing happens to worry about Teesta treaty and everything will be disclosed formally when they reach at a consensus on the issue, he added.
The minister went on saying that Mamata Banerjee due in Dhaka Friday, day before Narendra Modi’s visit, indicated that discussions on Teesta issue are underway. If there comes any success all will be informed then, he added.
State Minister for Foreign Affairs M Shahriar Alam, Foreign Secretary Shahidul Haque, and Bangladesh High Commissioner to India Syed Muazzem Ali, among others, were present there.
On June 6, Narendra Modi will begin his two-day visit to Bangladesh.
