DHAKA: The Chief Justices of Bangladesh and Thailand Surendra Kumar Sinha and Direk Ingkaninanda agreed to exchange visits of the judges and trainee judges between the two countries with a view to sharing of best practices and technical capacity building in the delivery of justice.

The decision came from a bilateral meeting at the Thai Supreme Court Office chambers of Direk Ingkaninanda, also President of Thai Supreme Court, Tuesday afternoon (May 18), says a press release issued by Bangladesh Embassy in Bangkok on May 19.

The Chief Justice of Bangladesh briefed the Chief Justice of Thailand about the ongoing reforms initiatives he has taken for speedy delivery of justice at all tiers of the court system of Bangladesh, particularly to clean up back logs of cases under the lower courts.

The two chief justices also exchanged views on the practice of independence of the judiciary and powers of the supreme courts of their countries to deliver and ensure justice to the citizens.

Justice SK Sinha also briefed that the Constitution of Bangladesh is a secular constitution with necessary checks and balances amongst the three branches including the Legislature, the Judiciary and the Executive.

The two chief justices expressed satisfaction over cooperation in various areas of mutual assistance in legal matters between the two countries including the bilateral extradition treaty that have helped extradite each other's convicted criminals.

The Chief Justice of Thailand assured all cooperation in bilateral judicial and legal matters as well as those of transnational criminal matters from the courts of Thailand.

Later in the evening, President of Thai Supreme Court also hosted an official dinner in honour of Bangladesh Chief Justice.

Bangladesh ambassador to Thailand Saida Muna Tasneem was also present during the meeting.

However, the Chief Justice of Bangladesh arrived in Bangkok to attend the “Asia-Pacific Roundtable on Environmental Rule of Law for Sustainable Development in Support to Post-2015 Development Agenda” that held on May 20.

Thailand was a co-host of the roundtable. Seven Chief Justices of ASEAN and South Asian countries also participated in the meeting.
