DHAKA: A Dhaka court sentenced Helal Uddin, suspended officer-in-charge (OC) of Khilgaon Thana to 3-year imprisonment over torture on a Dhaka University student Abdul Qader.
First Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate M Alamgir Kabir passed the order at 5:00pm Sunday.
During the announcement of the verdict, the accused Helal Uddin sought time on the ground of his illness.
But, the court issued warrant for arrest Helal Uddin, cancelling the bail plea as he is a fugitive.
On October 2, 2012, a Dhaka court framed charge against the former OC Helal Uddin for torturing Qader.
Abdul Qadar sued the former OC for torturing him in custody and framing him after his arrest.
According to case statement, some plainclothes police detained Qader in the early hours of July 15, 2012 while he was returning to Fazlul Haque Hall of Dhaka University from one of his relatives' residence in city’s Eskaton area.
In his case, Qadar alleged that he was severely tortured in police custody.
