Nor’westers claim 47, injure 266 countrywide

DHAKA: A total of 47 people were killed and 266 others injured by the recent series of nor’wester that lashed across 15 districts from April 4 to April 8, said sources of National Disaster Response Coordination Center (NDRCC).

According to NDRCC, a total of 43,184 families have been affected by the nor’westers at 47 upazilas of the 15 districts. Of them, 9,057 houses have been destroyed completely and 31,619 houses partially.

The series of storms also destroyed two education institutions and damaged 99 partially, washing away crops on some 6,980 acres of land, added sources of NDRCC, which is run by Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief (MODMR).

According to the sources, government has kept providing relief and cash to the affected people.

However, the storms felt relatively stronger in Bogra on April 4, killing 12 people, injuring 125 others.

NDRCC sources said the ministry has provided a total of Tk 20,000 to the families of the deceased each and allocated rice as gratuitous relief (GR) and corrugated iron sheets for the affected families to rebuild their houses.

MODMR joint secretary (Disaster Wing) Kamrul Hasan told banglanews that the local administrations are giving relief to the affected families and the ministry is allocating more relief materials on demands.
