Nor’westers kill 25 in 8 dists

DHAKA: At least 25 people were killed and dozens more injured as Nor’westers lashed Dhaka and some northwestern districts on Saturday night.

Banglanews correspondents from affected areas across the country report:

Dhaka: A 40-year-old man named Hanif Sheikh was killed in mid-Buriganga during the storm. Four more people were injured at Shahbagh, Nilkhet and Dholaipar in the capital.

Two electricians were also electrocuted while repairing a billboard around 1:45am after storm hit Bijoy Shoroni area of the city.

The deceased were identified as Mizanur Rahman, 39, and Abbas Ali, 30.

Bogra: Fifteen people were killed and scores injured in Bogra during the Nor’wester.

Police sources said of the deceased, four in Sadar upazila, three in Shahjahanpur Upazila, three in Sariakandi Upazila, two in Kahalu Upazila, one in Dhunot, one in Sonatola and one in Gabtalo Upazila.

Bogra additional police super (Special Branch) Arifur Rahman Mandol confirmed the matter to banglanews.

Rajshahi: Three people including a woman were killed and hundreds of houses were damaged by the storm.

Rest others were killed in Naogaon, Natore, Pabna, Sumanganj and Sirajganj districts. The storm left people in dark, even the Prime Minister’s office, as power connections were cut off due to cyclonic move.

Besides, hundreds of passengers were stranded on mid-Padma river as ferries carrying them got stuck on Mawa-Kewrakandi and Daulatdia-Paturia water ways.

The Nor’wester also damaged hundreds of houses, uprooted trees in some districts including Jamalpur, Meherpur, Pabna, Sirajganj, Sunamganj and Brahmanbaria.
